Review

“I have a outstanding little mutt but she is hyper and not very focalized when it comes to training. She has a bit of a chewing problem and I’ll find flip-flops, shoes, socks, dog toys, and assorted items chewed up if she’s alone for awhile. I read this book with regards to training tips and I decisive that the spray bottle may be a outstanding way to distract her from chewing on my things. Did I mention that my dog loves baths? I didn’t know if this would work due to her love of water, but the initial time I saw her carry my sock around the house, I grabbed the bottle and squirted her with it. First she dropped the sock, and ran as if something attacked her. I waited for her to grab the sock again which she did immediately, and then I squirted her again. She took off running and just starred at the sock from the kitchen. The last try was her grabbing the sock and running into my bedroom, but I was competent to squirt her right before she got inside the door. She dropped the sock and jumped on my bed. She ought to have starred at the sock for 30 minutes, but she never touched it again. I think the sentiment was uncomfortable for her and she related the sock being the uneasiness she was feeling. If I proceed using the spray bottle when she has things in her mouth, I just may be competent to salvage my clothes and belongings. Overall, great tip with prompt results!” – Kelly Paetow, Lubbock, TX

1Worst dog training book ever
By Khris Erickson
As a professional dog trainer I read a lot of dog training books. This is without a doubt the worst dog training book I’ve ever read. It might be free, but it’s not worth your time to read it.

A very small amount of the advice is good — most of it is bad, and some outright dangerous. In the section about barking she talks about using punishment to get rid of barking. However, there are a lot of different reasons that dogs bark, and if a dog is barking due to fear or anxiety punishment could make the problem worse.

In the section about “food aggression” her advice is to either “provide adequate food” or to punish. Later when she talks about “object guarding” — in which she includes food, the author recommends giving the dog an incentive to share such as giving it a treat. She completely contradicts herself. (The latter is the better advice).

When talking about aggression and growling she suggests punishing the dog. No credible professional trainer would give advice out like this without recommending that an owner seek professional help in order to ensure that the training was save. And trainers don’t recommend that growling be punished, since a growl is valuable information that a dog uses to warn. Take away the growl and you take away the dog’s warning system — meaning that he will likely just go straight to biting when he’s stressed, fearful, or feels the need to defend himself.

The obedience command section defines what the commands should look like, but the author fails to describe how you might actually train your dog to do them. The trick training section is just as bad “Pick a trick command… Say it out loud and perform a hand motion which is useful in teaching them how they should move”. I doubt that anyone who hasn’t ever trained a dog before would be able to successfully train a dog to sit or down, much less do a trick based on these instructions.

The title of this books is “Secrets to Dog Training Methods”. Some secrets are meant to be kept and this book is one of them. And the author’s name is “Kimberly W. Trainer”. Interesting last name — coincidence or pseudonym? I’m guessing the latter — because the author most likely is not a professional trainer and if the author’s real name was given someone might actually be able to check on credentials.

5Good, Complete Training Guide
By Joseph
I’m an animal lover and have owned dogs in the past and hopefully will again once I move into a new house. This book is one of the best on dog training out there. I know there are many trainers charging ungodly amounts of money to train your dog. Why bother when you can do it yourself and it’s laid out so easily in one book. Try this before shelling out cash for a dog trainer. It’s worth it.

3No Secrets Here
By Spudman
Secrets is a rudimentary compilation of common sense advice and tips for the dog owner. For a brand new dog owner there may be some valuable information to be culled from this brief dog training primer. For the experienced dog parent, there’s little here that one hasn’t read or heard before or simply learned from experience.

The ebook is a series of brief paragraphs that jump from topic to topic. I was disappointed by the lack of any photos or illustrations. If one’s expectations aren’t too high, this might be a worthwhile book for a new dog parent.
